When we (my wife & I) started our company almost four years ago we missed out on a big opportunity. It’s a mistake that too many entrepreneurs continue to make & the side-preneurs are even worse. It’s something so easy & free but most people put off doing it until later. It’s social media.
We started our business, Tnee’s, in the spring of 2013. Unfortunately, we did not start any social media account for our business until many months later. From the time we started our business to the time we opened an Instagram account for our business, Instagram grew from around 100 million users to 150 million users. That means we missed out on a huge opportunity. Looking back, we did start our Instagram account at a great time however it could have been even better had we just created it sooner. There’s an old Chinese Proverb that says: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is NOW!
DO NOT WAIT to start your business’ social media account. If you haven’t started one stop reading this & create one. Since we started Tnee’s Instagram account we’ve averaged over 80 new followers per day. If we would have started the account 6 months earlier that is over 14,000 more followers. Knowing what I know about Instagram now I know that it would have translated into much more than 14,000 followers. There are so many benefits social media brings to businesses today, especially small businesses, that it is an absolute must to have. No matter what type of business you have. No matter what product or service you are trying to sale social media can help you. I believe social media is so powerful that it needs to be one of the main focuses of every small business.
There is no better way for small businesses to communicate with their customers than social media. It’s a way to portray your values, vision, competitive advantage, style, schedule, products, services, & so much more in real time. Customers will feel more comfortable & connected with your business. Competition is so fierce nowadays & one thing that can easily & quickly set you apart is social media.
I am someone who typically does a lot (maybe too much) research before buying almost anything. The one thing that can & does sway my buying habits is the trusted input of my social media friends. Here are some examples of that: I have a goal of reading 52+ books this year. The first thing I did was post on Facebook asking my friends for suggestions on which books to read. There were so many books that I had not even heard of that are now on my list to read. Another example is every time our family goes on a vacation we post on our social media platforms & ask our followers for suggestions on where to stay, eat, & what to do while we are there. We ALWAYS get the most amazing ideas with this method. Many times these suggestions come with pictures & links to the sources social media accounts.
To sum up this blog post:
Start your social media accounts even BEFORE you launch your product or service
Over 90% of Tnee’s customers come from social media
The number 1 influence on my purchases is social media friends
There’s no risk or fee to start social media accounts
